What is SMS Mobile Marketing?
SMS
stands for “Short Message
Service”. The short
portion of the term comes
from the fact that messages
have a maximum length of 160
characters. Text messages
are not email and are sent
and received on cell phones.
Synonymous terms are
Texting, TXT, SMS, and Text
Message.
SMS Mobile Marketing in
simplest terms is the practice of leveraging this technology to reach an
audience in a group or mass manner. Platforms have been developed to allow a
single person to send text messages to multiple recipients quickly and
efficiently either from a PC or mobile phone. Not only is it a marketing tool,
but is also being widely used by large groups & organizations to share
information or alerts.
Currently, there are approximately 30 billion
SMS messages sent globally each month, with the majority of that traffic
occurring in Western Europe and Asia. In North America most major cellular
providers offer either one-way or two-way SMS to their subscribers. With one-way
service, you can receive messages; while with two-way service, you can both
receive and send messages. A short code is required for two-way messaging.
One message to one recipient is equal to one credit used. If
you send one message to 50 different cell phones at the same time, that would be
50 credits.
